Altered Images Release First New Album in 39 Years
The 39-year gap between Altered Images’ previous album, ‘Bite’, and the release of the brand new album Mascara Streakz is one of the longest in the history of popular music. But previewed by a host of dazzling disco dancefloor fillers - including the title track, ‘Beautiful Thing’, ‘Glitter Ball’, ‘Home’ and ‘Double Reflection’ - Clare Grogan has ensured that Mascara Streakz has been worth the wait.
The album has been greeted with a wealth of critical acclaim, while Clare Grogan has returned to the spotlight as if she has never been away with interviews including Steve Lamacq (6Music), Ken Bruce (Radio 2) and Radio 4’s Loose Ends. Mascara Streakz is Number 12 in the UK midweek Official Album Charts.
Key collaborators across the album include Bernard Butler, who was recently nominated for a Mercury Prize with Jesse Buckley for ‘For All Our Days That Tear the Heart’, Robert Hodgens of The Bluebells and Altered Images alumni Stephen Lironi.
Speaking on the album, Clare Grogan says, “We really kept that in mind the whole time. What would an Altered Images record be after 39 years? So there's a lot of guitar sounds that would have been very much part of what we did then. But while we were mindful of it, we didn't let it dictate it. Because I’ve been out playing to them, I know that our audience were just so ready for something that's taken a leap – because it has been 39 years! I didn't want to do a rehash of what I've done before. I wanted it to be very now, but using the references of the past.”
